December 10 – Human Rights Day
Posted 10 December 2020

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence ends on December 10 – which is also Human Rights Day. The 2020 theme is: Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights. The COVID-19 pandemic further exasperated gender inequities resulting in countless women experiencing an increase in violence and economic upheaval. For many women, “home” became the most unsafe place to be. Women were unable to escape violence in their home and seek safe shelter, as government restrictions and lockdowns required people to stay home. An already strained shelter system endured further limitations, resulting in less beds being available to women and children who did manage to escape abusive homes. The “perfect storm” unleashed its fury and resulted in many women experiencing higher levels of abuse. As we continue to fight COVID-19, we must also fight to end gender-based violence and inequities. Become a Steel City Ally and end gender-based violence at #firststepfirstchange #bemorethanabystander
